Yes To October

The long wait is over I think. People are feeling more secure to ride public transportation. I see people entering restaurants. The Philippines is vaccinating 12 years and older (with parental permission). Slowly we are going back to our jobs because we are needed. I found Robert bringing his grand daughter's dog to the vet. We were still wearing our masks, but the thing is, we are worrying about our pets' health now.

My computer gave me a scare when it notified me about a failing hard drive in my zfs pool. I checked my Disk application to verify and the OS is not detecting one particular hard drive. I don't believe that the drive is failing. So I opened the box and checked the SATA cables. I have a few spares and I replaced the cables instead. I reboot the desktop and opened the disk application. This time the hard drive is detected. I gave the "zpool scrub" command to clean detected errors. I reboot once again. I really don't have any problems except loose cables.

I am excited about the Apple tv series "Foundation". It's now on Episode 7 and I can't wait to talk about it in a separate blog post. Also Dune 2021 is out playing in theaters.  Or should I say Dune Part 1 as its director want us to call it, to remind us there's definitely a second film on the way.  Yes I have read both books. I do have some expectations because I am a fan of these books. But I do understand there are differences in the media and in the way films are made, the reasons for them and that sort. I'll make a blog post later any way.

The pandemic changed how Undas is celebrated. Undas is Halloween to the Americans and to the Western culture I guess. Mom lit four candles outside the door. One each for the souls of people close to us. They are Dad, Imee, her parents. It shows that we remember them and that we pray for their peace. We have to settle for these new habits. People used to spend this day in cementeries, cleaning their departed loved one's tombs. Imagine the entire population of the living pouring into these places to mingle in the season of a health crisis like Covid.

One other matter that the pandemic affected is the way we pay bills and send money for whatever purpose. Perhaps the technology is already there but filipinos still use their paper bills and coins to do business. In this last months, filipinos with digital devices and Internet savvy become acute users of e-wallets and electronic payment facilities. Banks pushed their own apps for presenting banking services closer. I can just open my bank's app to transfer funds to billers and creditors. This generation of filipinos are more accustomed to this way of financial transacting  than any other.

Cignal tv replaced one of their boxes. I swapped my two boxes to test if it is one of the boxes that's really broken. I called Cignal tv and requested a replacement unit. They sent one of their tech people the next day and he brought a brand new one.

Dra. Tarriela and Jonathan Abano terminated their rentals this month. Farewell and good luck.

Mailvelope, Encryption for Webmail

Encryption is the topic of week. I wrote about it in a related post here. While encryption is a very good idea, doing it and doing it every day as part of your work flow is another thing. My view is that if you're already using an email client then it is easier, simpler and more convenient to adopt encryption. That is not the case if you're using a webmail service. If you are using the browser to check, compose and send your email, what are your options? The answer is: it's complicated. Looking for a way to do encryption with Google Chrome and Gmail, I found this. I also read that Google just released code for email encryption as open source. But it's a long way to being used by end users. The extension for Google Chrome works fine if the recipient also uses Google Chrome. But I went ahead and check this on Evolution.

Donald Trump Is The 45th President of the United States

and he is preparing to move with his transition team into the Oval Office. His election is a shock to many political observers and the world in general. Donald Trump, the president-elect, ran against Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and for many the most qualified candidate for the presidency in many years. This has led to many post election analysis of how this upset happened. The numbers of votes for each candidate and the comparisons with previous presidential elections point to the fact that the white vote for Mr. Trump is solid all throughout but the minority and black votes did not come for Mrs. Clinton. This is what happened in crucial States like Michigan and Florida. The Republicans kept Congress and the Senate. It is quite notable that Russia and in particular, Vladimir Putin, is happy that they are going to talk to Mr. Trump rather than Mrs. Clinton. It is also a ...

Webapps in Unity

So it has been 4 months since Ubuntu 14.04 came out. This is LTS and supported for 6 years by Canonical. The first mobile device with Ubuntu pre-installed is promised to come out later this year, 2014. It's time to check out how the apps perform so far. It is a good idea. I use Gmail and Twitter and Facebook. Why not a webapp in a desktop? So I start the Twitter and Gmail webapp. So far it has crashed my computer 6 times. Not a very good sign. On the other hand it does work but not as stable as opening them in Firefox. -- Use my PGP key if you want to encrypt your replies/messages to me.
