Guake!

Guake is a drop-down terminal application in GNOME. Installing Guake is easy. Use your distribution's package manager, most distros have it in their repositories. In Arch, I just $pacman -S guake [enter] You can configure Guake to follow your theme and also change the hotkeys. The example above has transparency and added in the startup application list. You can just as well use the Cntrl+Shift+T shortcut to get Gnome-terminal but when you need to open many instances of the terminal to do jobs simultaneously, Guake is convenient and clean because in one click of the key it drops down and keep tabs.

User Tips On Evolution Mail [4]

This is the fourth of a series of blog posts on Evolution Mail. Link to third part of the series Link to second part of the series Link to first part of the series I happen to like Evolution Mail's user interface. The left panel is the email list and the right panel is the email itself. This is the vertical view of the main email window. If you hit the F9 key the email folders are revealed on the left side. When you want to read emails, go to Mail mode and the keyboard shortcut for that is Cntrl + 1. Make sure the email list is the focus. If you want to view or read the email on its own window, type Cntrl + O. Use the spacebar to move a page down. Use the Backspace key to move one page up. Pressing the spacebar when you are on the last page of the email will move you to the next unread email. These will happen even if the next unread email is on another folder. Evolution Mail doesn't download images automatically by default. There are privacy issues in automatically downloadin

When Pacman Creates Pacnew Files

If you are an Arch linux OS user for sometime, encounters with its package manager called pacman is usually a non-event. I mean if you have machines with Windows OS, any kind of update is usually a major chore not to mention headache. This experiences not withstanding pacman updates sometimes gives us warnings when it creates pacnew files. Sometimes new versions of packages carry with it a new default config file. What pacman does is it detects your existing config file and renames the new incoming one as *.pacnew It is recommended that attention to these *.pacnew files be given and to compare them immediately with your existing config file. I use an application called 'Meld'. To install Meld use the command #pacman -S meld. It's in the main repositories. What Meld does is graphically show you the differences between the two files. In this case, your existing config file and the *.pacnew file which pacman just created. Use your mouse and decide if the difference

User Tips On Evolution Mail [03]

First Part, User Tips On Evolution Mail Second Part, User Tips On Evolution Mail Evolution Mail is not without its downsides. I often experience slowdown, sluggish performance, freezing altogether. When performance degrades, can't download the message for example, I often check memory usage of goa-daemon. I often kill this process and restart evolution. $ps aux | grep goa ##to monitor the process goa-daemon $ps -A --sort -rss -o comm, pid, pmem | head -n 10 ##to list top 10 memory processes Use the kill {pid} command to stop the process. Use the above commands to analyze goa-daemon and top memory usage.

User Tips On Evolution Mail [02]

Haven't read the first part of this blog post yet? Here's the first part. Evolution Mail has a Calendar mode. Surprise. To get to Calendar from anywhere, just type Cntrl + 3.  You can organize a meeting with Cntrl + Shift + E. You can create a new appointment with Cntrl + Shift + A. I

User Tips On Evolution Mail [01]

First some caveats, GNOME devs are always making changes or adding new things specially in the user interface of GNOME applications. That applies to Evolution Mail. Do you know that you can navigate by keyboard shortcuts through the various modes of Evolution. Mail --> Cntrl + 1 Contacts --> Cntrl + 2 Calendar --> Cntrl + 3 Task --> Cntrl + 4 Memo --> Cntrl + 5 Say you're in Mail now. You want to go to a particular folder. If you're like me I have 50 folders in total in my 3 email accounts. So all I have to do is just begin typing the first letter of the folder then press 'Enter'. Say I want to go to 'Inbox', once I typed the letter I, the first Inbox folder from the top is highlighted, then press 'Enter'. This is the reason why I put my most used email account on the top. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go to Evolution Preferences --> Mail Accou

Update Google-Chrome Browser 60 --> 61

Google-chrome in Arch is in the Arch User Repository. It means I have to be responsible for updating the package when a new version is released. I've been lazy at updating point releases lately. I just updated my version two days ago for a point release. Now I learned that version 61 is out. $ git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/google-chrome.git Cloning into 'google-chrome'... remote: Counting objects: 414, done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (305/305), done. remote: Total 414 (delta 199), reused 287 (delta 109) Receiving objects: 100% (414/414), 81.90 KiB | 274.00 KiB/s, done. Every Man For Himself

When it's every man for himself, we forget that total resources are finite. Each one who can, spends all he can to solve a problem to his satisfaction. He soon realizes that it is an illusion. It is then too late.

Butterfly, Sample, Lyrics and Comments

I would guess that some of the lines here are the most quoted in conversations between two people in a relationship. At least that was my impression back in 1998. So here goes and ready your tissue box please. Here comes Mariah Carey. When you love someone so deeply They become your life It's easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside Blindly I imagined I could Keep you under glass  Now I understand to hold you Mariah Carey - Butterfly (ogg format) I must open up my hands And watch you rise Spread your wings and prepare to fly For you have become a butterfly, oh Fly abandonedly into the sun If you should return to me We truly were meant to be So spread your wings and fly Butterfly I have learned that beauty Has to flourish in the light Wild horses run unbridled Or their spirit dies You have given me the courage To be all that I can And I truly feel your heart will Lead you back to me when you're Ready to land I can't pretend these t

Bird Migration

The recent bird flu outbreak in Pampanga is crippling the poultry industry. Hundreds of thousands of chickens will be culled before it's over. The bird flu in the Philippines has always been blamed on bird migration. The Philippines is a natural route of several major species of birds. Imagine the entire human population today just packing up their bags and travelling across the globe, that is what is happening with bird migration. It is in the billions of birds worldwide.

Update Perl 5.24 --> 5.26 In Arch linux

Perl now uses a versioned path for compiled modules. Modules built for perl version not matching it will not be loaded and must be rebuilt. If you get a warning message from pacman in the update run the command: #pacman -Qqo ##to get a list of affected packages Ref: URL: https://www.archlinux.org/news/perl-library-path-change/

Tweaks In My Graphical User Interface From The Stock GNOME

My desktop is the latest GNOME 3.24 released April 2017 over Arch. I use United Theme for GNOME specifically United-Arch-Compact. Then I changed the stock GNOME icons with Flat-Remix. I have an affinity to the Ubuntu font family. (top)email reader (middle)gnome-tweak-tool or the gnome tweaks (bottom)email composer I have a problem with Evolution toolbars. It's hidden and I can't unhide it. I can do so in Firefox but not in Evolution. Why not?
