On hindsight this will probably go faster and more secured if I did a backup first and connected the laptop by cable not by wifi.
Asus laptop with ubuntu 18.04
First upgrade the packages.
$ sudo -i ## to get privilege of a root account
root@desktop # apt update && apt upgrade ## to update and upgrade packages to their latest
Second step is to install "update-manager-core"
root@desktop # apt install update-manager-core ## if you don't have it yet
Third step is to upgrade.
root@desktop # do-release-upgrade -d ## begin the upgrade, the "d" flag is to force the upgrade to the next new release
It took 90 minutes to download packages on my wifi speeds. I have a slow home wifi. There was some prompts here and there, primarily to ask me about packages being removed here and there. Answer with the first letter of your response and press enter. Configuration and installation took about another 60 minutes. The installation used the snap version of Gnome 3.34. It took some time too.
Fourth step is to reboot.
