so in Ubuntu. I think I might have changed it then forget about it.
I've been running the current session for more days than I should have.
I forget. So what's the solution to my problem. How do I get in to my
system now?

It involved getting into the grub menu somehow. I am uncertain as to
how to do that exactly in your system. So there's a couple of ways to
do it (finger's crossed). When booting at system start, use the esc key
or the shift key. The first one worked for me. The timing is key. Wait
until the bios banner shows then hit the esc key once. I am using
Ubuntu 22.04.4 here. I have a current version of grub.

The grub menu will give you options and the one you want is: root. Yes
you want root privileges to set the root password. It should give you a
terminal access where you can issue commands.

Type: #mount -rw -o -s remount / ==> this command mounts the
filesystem

At this point, check how many users you have. Type this command.

# ls /home ==> gives you the names of users

If you are the only user, then I assume you use sudo to gain root
privileges. Setting your password is setting root password, so.

Type: #passwd username
#password ==> type your password, it will not show you what
you're typing (like in the movies). Then it will confirm what you
typed.

To exit the grub menu just type exit. You might also just want to
reboot the system, in which case type reboot. And that's it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-67734809133277459702024-02-28T17:37:00.001+08:002024-02-28T17:37:12.566+08:00The Jump From Apollo To OdysseusThe last Apollo mission was Apollo 17 in 1972. It was commanded by
Eugene Cernan and crewed by Ronald Evans and Harrison Schmidt. They
spent 22 hours in the Moon. Fast forward to 2024, a remote controlled
robotic spacecraft and lander made it back to the Moon. It is called
Odysseus. Well it is suppose to study the Moon's South Pole where it is
hoped that water can be found in those dark low ground areas barely
touched by the Sun. Unfortunately, during the landing it hit a ground
obstacle and tipped over to its side. Its science capabilities are now
greatly diminished but it has power enough to tell Earth that it is in
I was able to bill and get paid for my troubles (and Mom). Also, our
scientists took this time to tell us that 2023 is the hottest year in
144 years of record keeping. They predict that 2024 will continue the
trend.

I like the salty pandesal I bought in Burgos this Sunday morning. Mom
and I shared breakfast. She cooked three beaten eggs with red onions. I
woke up early to urinate but I had to do it next door. My bathroom door
is locked from the inside. The door lock is broken. Next door is Mina's
apartment, empty now.

Mang Roger can't fix it now. His son, Toto, died of a stroke just after
New Year's Day.

My exercise routine is now at its lowest. Last month's cold turned to a
long coughing battle.

I finished the business of paying the annual license fees for the
apartments. There is that matter of renewing the fire extinguishers.
an authorization to transfer Tita Fely's remains to the family plot
also in Paraiso. So Mom signed and I gave them the title to the plot
and a pair of Mom's ID cards. Anthony will have to go to Paraiso's
Christopher died on the 4th and services are ongoing at Nuestra. This

These kids' mom, Tita Fely, took care of me and Lino when we were pre-
I don't want to experience long lines and crowded waiting areas when I
am already coughing and there are news of flu going around. An
earthquake of 7.6 magnitude strike Japan and a plane collision added to
my listlessness. Day 4 of 2024 went and I am still gathering documents
and papers for the business permit.

Mom and I are facing a busy January because our helper is absent
without leave.

I finished paying my SSS loan last month. I still have to worry about
my credit cards.

I experimented not taking my blood pressure meds. After a week not
taking them I felt nausea and headache. I am now back to my
hypertension medication. Thank you.
I downloaded the e-lotto philippine app on my phone. I can get the
and pay with my e-wallet of choice. I wonder what my father would say
about gambling being so convenient and easy. I have a lotto station as

As far
as
the Icelandic people were concerned volcanic activity were fairly
regular events. I woke up yesterday to two things which doesn't always
happen regularly. The first one was that the Colorado Supreme Court
gave a decision to disqualify Donald Trump in the 2024 United States
presidential election. Why was this abnormal? Because American judges
refrain from telling American voters who they can vote for. Essentially
that was what's happening here, although the decision will have to wait
for the US Supreme Court. Don't get me wrong I happen to agree with the
decision and its logic. The issue was that the fourteenth amendment of
the US Constitution disqualifies a person to be an elector of President
if after taking an oath he engaged in insurrection or rebellion. The
Colorado Supreme Court affirmed a lower court's decision on the matter.

The second item yesterday was Pope Francis' reversal on the
church blessing same-sex relationships. Change like this happen only in
a generation. The very next day a same-sex couple received a blessing
from a priest in New York. This is not a reversal on the teaching that
gay relationship is a sin. But it does emphasize Pope Francis' call for
love and forgiveness of the sinner to the church.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-38945006369501213422023-12-14T18:21:00.001+08:002023-12-14T18:21:25.482+08:002023 Summary Part 1The year is coming to a close. I heard some medical news from China about hospitals getting swamped with respiratory cases. China denied this is unusual. It is the flu season after all.
I have started a supplementation regime in 2023. I am taking the following:
Berberine. No recommended dosage but I am taking 2 x 1000 mg caps. Combined with 250 mg milk thistle.
Vitamin D3. RDI for it is 800 IU. I am taking 5000 IU caps. Combined with 200 mg Vitamin K2.
Magnesium. Magnesium citrate at first and changed it to magnesium glycinate. RDI is 420 mg. I am taking 680 mg in a white gel caps.
Omega 3. DHA and EPA are forms of omega 3. These are the active molecules of marine oils. Source is fatty fish oil. Salmon and sardines are good ones. I eat sardines but I am supplementing with 690 mg of EPA and 260 mg of DHA.
Zinc Glycinate. Choline Bitartrate. Milk Thistle. These supplements are taken in two white gel caps. I get 30 mg of zinc glycinate, 30 mg of choline and 300 mg of milk thistle.
X-ray showed atherosclerotic aorta last September annual medical for my health insurance. I am borderline obese, at worse, obese stage 1.
system. Well there was a kernel upgrade and I have not checked how many
old kernels are still left for backups in /boot. Apparently, there was
a few and the partition is 85% full. Every software update included a
warning because of the restriction in disk space. Also, zfs could not
create snapshots. It is also full. This is not very clear to me.
Snapshots were suppose to be diff copies so why would it take up a
large space. Most of the snapshots are less than 2MB. Or 0MB.

Another problem that popped up is the constant freezing of Rhythmbox. I
don't know if the config files are corrupted. The CPU cycles from one
to the next. Peaks for 5-6 seconds then on to the next CPU. This forced
me to download Clementine and Audacious. But both applications do not
find the zfs pool or don't show the zfs structure. Why not? My final
solution is to reinstall Rhythmbox via snaps. I re-scanned the music
library and I have access to my library again. No more freezing too.
# dpkg --purge linux-image-xxx : to remove the kernel

$ df -h : to check the disk spaceUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-15560876719339658732023-01-16T11:31:00.001+08:002023-01-16T11:31:07.453+08:00Renter's ID and Business Licensing 2023Last year's business permit application involved an undertaking of
submitting lessee list to the Barangay in order to get them ID's
including one for the lessor himself. I received a letter of
notification just before New Year's Day. It informed me that I might be
denied renewal of permits because I did not comply with this
undertaking.

So the Renter's ID is a serious thing now. When I went ahead and
applied for a business permit renewal at the local government office
everything went well except they want my list of lessee. So I had to
backtrack and go to the Barangay and submit the list. They produced the
ID's and I provided the photo ID's and of course have it signed by the
lessee. After that, they pointed me to the cashier to pay the taxes and
permit fees which totaled php15,305.00 ($280.33)

During the payment of Fire and Safety department, they reminded me to
bring my fire extinguisher official receipts of payment. I can pick up
my new permits 3 business days after payment. I then order a fire
extinguisher refill. I swapped 2 tanks for their checked / refilled
ones. I got my Official receipt to show local government people I am in
compliance.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-19813447752924275882023-01-06T01:08:00.001+08:002023-01-06T01:08:21.828+08:00Covid Deja vuIt was January 2020. There was a breath of news about a growing medical
problem in China. People were exhibiting symptoms of flu and cold but
people reasoned that it's the winter season, it's the flu season. In a
few weeks everything will soon be okay. By March 2020, more than half
the world will turn to lock downs and travel restrictions due to the
Covid-19 virus.

It is January 2023 now. In China's Wuan province where the pandemic
made its first appearance in 2020, a rising number of Covid-19 cases
have been reported. Hospitals are inundated with people sick with the
same symptoms as the 2020 Covid-19 flu.

crisis and therefore another wave of economic downturn?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-48374755913995881582022-10-09T19:55:00.001+08:002022-10-09T19:57:19.127+08:00Ukraine's Counter Offensive

The last week saw the forces of Ukraine retake a large part of the Russian controlled territory of Donbas. When Russia started this war last February, their tanks rolled over Ukrainian forces who did not think it would happen. That Russia was moving troops and vehicles just over the border was communicated by the United States. But to actually cross the border and invade Ukrainian land is a jump. However, one could point out that Russia already hinted at what they are capable of if we look at Crimea. The world resigned to Russia taking what they want. Months following the Russian so-called special operations, the world watched how the Ukrainians steeled themselves and fought back.

The Ukrainian forces armed with weapons from the West destroyed Russian tanks and killed Russian generals. They exposed Russian military weaknesses in tactics and logistics. They took back 2,500 square kilometers of territory as they sent Russian forces retreating. Russian losses in personnel and tanks this last months is equal to years spent fighting in Afghanistan. Retreating forces left ammunition boxes and serviceable tanks behind for the Ukrainian forces to use for themselves.

Ukraine sunk the Russian Navy Black Sea fleet flagship, the Moskva. They successfully defended the capital Kyiv. They were able to count on western allies to put economic pressure on Russia. They exposed civilian atrocities committed by units of the Russian army.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-49743482116034535132022-09-04T23:32:00.003+08:002022-09-04T23:32:58.715+08:00Ubuntu's Firefox Issue
I don't use Ubuntu 22.04's Firefox snap version because it breaks keepassxc. I have two 2TB Seagate
Hard drives, one 1TB also Seagate which is the oldest and the failed
2TB hard drive. I can't tell which one is going to fail next. It is
never about the hours and years it has been spinning. The youngest
drive is 1 year and 1 month old. The oldest drive is 7 years plus
months.

It is the Operating System and or the motherboard itself which tells
you when a hard drive is failing. When this happens, ZFS will also
concur and declares the pool degraded. I have three hard drives
(devices) that form the pool plus one hard drive for parity. Parity
means 1 drive can fail without data loss.

I have to take the failed drive offline. The command for that is:

#zpool offline [pool] [device]

You can use the device GUID or the name of the device.

I then replaced the old hard drive with the new one. The command for
that is :

#zpool replace [pool] [old device] [new device]

You can use the device GUID or the name of the device.

Information on the device can be found on $zpool status [pool] or $zdb.
ZFS will resilver and calculate parity using the new device. All you
have to do is wait until it finishes. The data is available for use.
ZFS does this in the background.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-82756200936698553752022-05-10T23:59:00.000+08:002022-05-11T00:00:01.671+08:00About My Dad
I remembered my Dad. We had a manual water pump in the house that he used as an exercise tool to keep fit. He also filled the steel tank with water which supplied the house. I also remember that he keeps a vegetable garden in the backyard. He plants kamoteng kahoy and banana. My dad was a doctor and he kept clinic hours until the evening. He died at 76. His first stroke happened at 52. I was in high school. He recovered then. He died May 10 2003 a year after suffering another stroke.

A school mate mentioned and he uniquely remembered that his brothers were circumcised by one Dr Delfin M Roque. I'm sure they were. My father served the community well. We would miss him every Media Noche (New Year's Eve Meal) because that's when all the fireworks casualties come in. When I invited him to be a medical resource person for a symposium on drug abuse at school, he went. He was in the roster of Filipino World War II veterans. He was 15 when the war broke out. I don't know what's bothering this trusty old browser but I have not encounter this problem since i started using Linux. I downloaded a fresh Firefox off the Mozilla Website itself. It's a 237 mb download and I extracted it on a folder in my home directory so it would not be mistaken for the Ubuntu supplied firefox. I found the file to run the extracted files. Firefox runs magnificently. All my add-ons works including keepassxc-browser. Keepassxc-browser did not completely work with Firefox before. If someone can explain this and I have a feeling that somehow I sold my soul to the devil to get it to work.

So I understand that this personally downloaded version of Firefox won't be updated by apt/apt-get/dpkg and since its binary is in a unique location, I would be responsible for its maintenance and updating. BUT IT WORKS!!!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-60366892460547459562022-04-24T06:42:00.001+08:002022-04-24T06:44:44.501+08:00Upgrade To Ubuntu 22.04

I upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04 to Ubuntu 22.04 both LTS editions. I am keen on staying on the more stable line of linux and doing what's less audacious. I am trying to upgrade from one long term support release to another LTS to see if that kind of upgrade choice has improved. I did a "do-release-upgrade -d" procedure and in the back of my mind I entertained dark thoughts of upgrading to a "d" release even though Ubuntu 22.04 has been officially released.

What I actually did was: (1) looked at my /home directory and my files. Made sure these are backed up/ sync to somewhere else not your local computer, the computer I am upgrading. (2) #apt update && #apt upgrade. These dual commands updates all packages in my current Ubuntu version. (3) #apt autoremove. This command removes all packages that are no longer necessary. (4) #do-release-upgrade -d. This is the command that actually upgrades Ubuntu 20.04 to Ubuntu 22.04. It upgrades the old ubuntu to the new ubuntu. The "d" flag is necessary to force the upgrade.

To force the upgrade is a strong set of words to use here. It merely reminds you that these course of action has risk involved. The more thoughtful choice would be to install a fresh Ubuntu 22.04 downloaded off the verified mirrors of Canonical. Two reasons I can't do this are that I don't have a separate /home partition and I am using the experimental Ubuntu 20.04 ZFS on root version.

The upgrade finished after 45 minutes. I reboot to Ubuntu 22.04 with the jellyfish screen. And the splash screen was great. I entered my password to start my session. Dash-to-dock the GNOME extension isn't working and not compatible with the current GNOME version. I switched to the Ubuntu dock and I'm back.

The online accounts needed to be filled out again and authenticated. I found this out after I started Evolution. No problem to Thunderbird because it doesn't rely on the Online Accounts.

Firefox is stuck on troubleshooting mode. All add-ons are disabled and I can't troubleshoot it and I can't understand what's wrong. I can open websites and do my business just without the add-ons. Made me think how much I really need those add-ons.

I switched from the dark mode to the light mode to check the difference. I noticed how great the icons look now. It's the little things.

Something more profound with regard to workflow is the change from the vertical to the horizontal workspaces. I'm a big workspaces fan. I use the Cntrl+Alt--> keyset all the time. I wonder if any GNOME extension can revert this back to vertical.

So all in all, the basics are fine and I can work with Ubuntu 22.04. Firefox is still stuck in troubleshooting mode though. None of my personal files are missing. All my applications and services (mega sync) are working.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-9500865629781594142022-04-10T00:35:00.001+08:002022-04-10T00:35:25.807+08:00keepassxc: Browser Integration
I am a new user of keepassxc. This is a password manager for Windows, Mac and Linux. Originally I downloaded it using the ubuntu repository. But the developers of keepassxc released a new improved version not a week ago, so I decided to upgrade. Unfortunately, I can get the new version using snap or a PPA and decided to download the snap from the website. After the installation, I tested the password manager with my browser and it is broken. It worked before with the old version. So my search for a solution pointed me to this page: troubleshooting browser integration with keepassxc.

If you have keepassxc and using Linux, first check your version and how you install it. Then if you want browser integration which is a very neat thing to have if you are a password manager user, open the browser integration tab within the application. I use Mozilla Firefox and I need to download an add-on called keepassxc-browser. Keepassxc should be connecting with my browser but there's a glitch. After checking troubleshooting guide above, I need to edit a settings file here /home/user/.mozilla/native-messaging-hosts/org.keepassxc.keepassxc_browser.json. Just make sure the path= points to the directory of the keepassxc binary.

If you don't know where your keepassxc binary is use the command:

$ whereis keepassxc

Lastly, if you're using Linux and you install your browser using snap, integration isn't going to work. Install the browser and keepassxc from the distribution repository or PPA. AppleImage also works.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-81747799619066995082022-03-14T14:40:00.000+08:002022-03-14T14:46:05.578+08:00Credit Cards
Last year, my 78 year old mother decided to close her old bank account and open another with me as co-owner of the account. A few weeks after she had to stay ten days at the hospital for a heart trouble. She kept telling me and reminding me about the house payments, the loans and the new bank account. It was prescient of her to make such a move. She's a very practical lady.

I am mentioning this today because as a consequence the bank, her bank, got my personal information, specifically, my financial information and in the succeeding months sent me credit card applications. With our combined financial status I got a deal with a platinum credit card. It introduced me into the world of cash management and credit card purchasing. The lockdowns due to Covid made it crucial that people do business online and online meant using cards - credit cards. Online purchasing steadily become popular in the Philippines starting 2014. The forced isolation of the lockdown, the need for credit and cash management plus business going to social platforms to sell products and services is like the perfect storm for the increased adoption of credit cards. People have to pay their bills somewhere. People have to get their food and water and order them delivered to their doorsteps.

I now have my latest credit card from EastWest Bank with a credit limit of 43,000 php.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-10381029939735307092022-02-25T23:24:00.000+08:002022-02-25T23:36:44.814+08:00Russian Aggression In Ukraine
It is the third day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The reports have told of tanks entering border crossings and aircraft bombing airports and military targets well inside the country. It is clear that these actions by Russia is unwanted and uncalled for even taking into account the two separatist regions. There are no armed conflicts within Ukraine. Ukraine should have the right to work out its own problems with these separatist regions.

More over there are no guarantees that Russia will stop its invasion of Ukraine once security is restored to these separatist regions. In fact Putin explicitly calls for the government of Ukraine to surrender. It's open war against an independent European country!

There are around 400 Filipino workers in Ukraine according to our embassy. The plan is to evacuate them to Poland and Polish authorities have allowed this even if they don't have a visa.

The United States and the European Union are implementing a series of economic sanctions against Russia and Putin. European dependence on Russian oil is a worry. NATO spokesman said that the military agreement between the US and Europe have never been stronger.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93706778987925.post-42061703916405673872022-02-18T12:00:00.001+08:002022-02-18T12:00:48.465+08:00Thunderbird 91BEGIN:VCARD
Thunderbird email client has been updated since I last used it. I am
using version 91.5 in Ubuntu 20.04. I like the smooth desktop
integration in the Ubuntu Gnome hybrid. I regard it a hybrid because it
isn't pure Gnome. It has a lot of modifications. It handles better than
evolution. My issue with evolution went away when I open Thunderbird. My
issue is mainly how slow evolution downloads or syncs messages. It is so
bad that I would rather open Gmail in the browser than wait. I still
compose my emails in the desktop application.

Encryption in Thunderbird is no longer an add-on. It is integrated in
the application. This makes it easier to use OpenPGP to sign and encrypt
my emails.

I can open Google Calendar (yes, the web interface) within the client
with an add-on. I'm a happy camper.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
